Gain the Competitive Edge in the UK Agricultural Sector

Get the advanced manufacturing skills you need to secure or advance your agricultural career

Are you looking to upskill fast in advanced manufacturing technologies and tackle critical skill gaps in the UK agricultural industry? At 3D 360, we offer comprehensive training programmes that are funded and free to eligible learners. Whether you are a seasoned professional or new to the sector, our courses will help you stay ahead of the curve and secure a strong footing in an industry that is a cornerstone of the UK economy.

Why the UK Agriculture Industry Needs Skilled Professionals

The UK’s agricultural sector is a cornerstone of the economy and is rapidly evolving with new technologies. The broader agri-food industry contributed £146.7 billion in Gross Value Added in 2024 and employed 4.4 million people including workers on farms.

Demand for food is rising alongside sustainability goals, and modern farming must produce more with less. Recent analyses show the emerging agri-tech segment is growing: an estimated 327,600 jobs are already tied to agri-tech (14% higher than a decade ago), with projections of at least 7,500 additional jobs by 2030. This growth comes even as traditional farm numbers consolidate, indicating that technology and innovation roles are expanding to help remaining farms thrive.

Critically, this growth is creating a need for new skills. Agriculture in Britain is on the cusp of a high-tech transformation – often dubbed “Farming 4.0” – encompassing automation, data analytics, and digital manufacturing. Government reports emphasise that the increasing use of digitisation, robotics and automation requires highly qualified staff to maintain and operate these systems.

In short, the industry urgently needs skilled professionals from tech-savvy new entrants to upskilled existing workers to drive innovation and fill emerging roles. This is why advanced manufacturing training in agriculture has become so important. Equipped with cutting-edge skills, professionals can boost productivity on the farm, develop new agritech products, and help the UK meet food security and sustainability targets.

We have designed a DWP Funded Skills Bootcamp that covers a range of sought-after subjects, ensuring you or your team can master the latest methods and technologies used in the agriculture sector. You can enrol in the complete Bootcamp or choose individual fast upskilling courses if you need more focused learning.

Covering essential skills of advanced manufacturing in the agriculture sector

Which agricultutal training is right for you?

3D CAD Training

Designing the next generation of agricultural machinery and infrastructure

Additive manufacturing (3D printing) is helping British agriculture tackle engineering challenges, from creating custom machine parts to prototyping new agri-tech devices. For example, Intelligent Growth Solutions (IGS) used 3D printing for the UK’s first fully automated vertical farm in Dundee, iterating their patented indoor crop technology quickly.

Now, 3D printers also produce spare parts on farms, cutting equipment downtime. Large manufacturers like CNH Industrial have a “digital warehouse” of printable designs for over 250 spare parts.

Training in 3D printing can save farms money and generate income through custom fabrication, making it a vital skill for the future of UK food production.

Designing the next generation of agricultural machinery and infrastructure.

3D Computer-Aided Design (CAD) is transforming the way British farms develop equipment and facilities. Claydon Drills, based in Suffolk, credited 3D CAD with boosting turnover from £200,000 to £6 million by refining its strip tillage seed drill.

Standen Engineering also harnesses 3D CAD to fine-tune potato harvesters, designing digitally before manufacturing.

Yet a technical skills gap persists: fewer than 35% of UK farmers have formal management or technical training.

CAD training helps farmers and agritech entrepreneurs create bespoke solutions more efficiently, fuelling innovation across the sector.

Industry 4.0 Training

Applying “smart factory” principles to the farm-to-fork chain.

ndustry 4.0 merges automation, data exchange, and the Internet of Things to create “Agriculture 4.0,” where tractors, silos, and supply trucks share data in real time. This connectivity drives efficiency and precision.

Defra is funding multiple agri-tech research projects to integrate sensor networks and data analytics into farms.

Industry 4.0 training helps set up connected systems that communicate seamlessly, improving resilience and cutting waste. By adopting these principles, farm operations can run more like modern factories, lowering costs and strengthening the supply chain.

Robotics & Automation Training

Harnessing robots to tackle farming labour shortages and increase precision.

Automation is now addressing labour shortfalls on British farms, from robotic weeders in Lincolnshire to autonomous drones in Kent. Government-backed Farming Futures projects have supported farmyard-navigation robots and automated strawberry pickers to boost sustainability.

Pioneers like the Small Robot Company use 3D-printed lightweight parts to deploy “Tom, Dick and Harry” weed-targeting bots.

Robotics training teaches professionals to maintain, program, and troubleshoot these machines, bridging a key skills gap identified in the 2024 food supply report.

VR AR & Digital Twinning Training

Immersive tech for safer, smarter farming.

Virtual Reality simulations help farm workers practise machine operations in a risk-free setting. Nottingham Trent University and the Farm Safety Foundation used VR to teach tractor drivers hazard perception on rural roads.

Augmented Reality can overlay data onto the real world, speeding up repairs or showing soil metrics in real time. Digital twins, like those created by Agrimetrics with Microsoft, let managers test crop changes without real-world risks.

Training in these immersive tools fosters higher safety, lower error rates, and better planning in British agriculture.

AI, Cyber Security & Big Data Training

Managing the farm’s ‘brain’ and data while keeping it safe.

AI and data analytics can predict crop yields or disease outbreaks by correlating weather, soil, and historical trends. Firms like DroneAg use AI-driven drones to spot pests and nutrient issues in real time.

However, as farms digitise, cyber risks grow. The National Cyber Security Centre warns that hackers may exploit IoT sensors and robotics.

Training in big data and cyber security helps rural enterprises protect systems, keep operations efficient, and maintain trust in a data-led sector.

Industrial Internet of Things Training

Networks of smart sensors for “always-on” agriculture.

IoT devices allow constant monitoring of soil, crops, and livestock. A vertical farm at the James Hutton Institute uses sensors that adjust lighting and nutrients in real time to optimise indoor crop growth.

Dairy farms employ smart collars and milking robots to track each cow’s health metrics. With IoT training, agricultural workers learn to configure wireless protocols, calibrate sensors, and safeguard networks.

This upskilling is important, as many UK farms still rely on manual methods. Demand for IoT-savvy staff is rising sharply to meet production and sustainability goals.

Generate Income from Additive Manufacturing Training

Turning technological capabilities into agricultural business opportunities.

Around 68% of UK farms already diversify income through ventures like farm shops or renewable energy. Now, additive manufacturing and digital fabrication can open new streams, such as printing bespoke parts for neighbouring farms.

Over £120 million of government funding has gone into R&D projects since 2021, fostering innovation in areas like agri-robots and processing equipment.

The market for “Agriculture 4.0” is forecast to reach £49.4 billion by 2030, highlighting major commercial potential.

Firms like Arrow Lake and Small Robot Company use 3D printing and digital manufacturing to scale quickly, proving that these skills boost efficiency and revenue.

With Additive Manufacturing training, individuals can refine existing farm operations or develop entirely new products to sell, creating fresh opportunities for growth.
